Content Protection
Content protection prevents visitors from copying your product descriptions, images, and other content.
Why Content Protection?
Every day, competitors and thieves:
- Copy your product descriptions word-for-word
- Download your product images
- Scrape your pricing information
- Clone your entire store layout
Content protection makes this significantly harder.
Available Protections
Disable Right-Click
What it does: Prevents the context menu from appearing when visitors right-click.
Why use it: The context menu gives access to "Save Image As", "View Page Source", and other options that make stealing easy.
Visitor experience: Right-clicking does nothing. Legitimate customers rarely need to right-click.
Disable Copy/Paste
What it does: Prevents selecting and copying text on your store.
Why use it: Competitors often copy-paste your product descriptions to use on their own stores.
Visitor experience: Text cannot be selected. Consider enabling this only on product pages if you want customers to copy your address or contact info from other pages.
Image Protection
What it does: Prevents downloading images via drag-and-drop or long-press on mobile.
Why use it: Your product photos are valuable assets. This makes it harder to steal them.
Visitor experience: Images cannot be dragged. They can still be viewed normally.
Disable Text Selection
What it does: Completely prevents highlighting text on your store.
Why use it: Stronger than copy protection - prevents even selecting text.
Visitor experience: Text appears normal but cannot be highlighted.
DevTools Detection
What it does: Detects when someone opens browser developer tools.
Why use it: Developer tools let technical users bypass other protections and access your code.
Visitor experience: A warning message appears, or they're redirected away.
Note: This is a Pro plan feature.
View Source Protection
What it does: Blocks the Ctrl+U (View Source) keyboard shortcut.
Why use it: Prevents easy access to your page's HTML code.
Visitor experience: The keyboard shortcut does nothing.
How to Enable
- Go to Store Security in the sidebar
- Toggle on the protections you want
- Click Save
Changes take effect within 1-2 minutes.
Best Practices
Recommended Settings
For most stores, we recommend:
| Protection | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Right-click | ✅ Enable |
| Copy/paste | ✅ Enable on product pages |
| Image protection | ✅ Enable |
| Text selection | ⚠️ Optional (can frustrate customers) |
| DevTools detection | ✅ Enable (Pro) |
| View source | ⚠️ Optional |
Finding the Balance
More protection = less user-friendly
- If you sell digital products or unique content, use maximum protection
- If you want customers to share your content, use lighter protection
- Test on your own store to see how it feels
What Protection Can't Stop
Be aware that determined attackers can still:
- Take screenshots
- Use specialized scraping tools
- View page source in complex ways
Content protection raises the barrier significantly, but no protection is 100% foolproof. That's why we also offer bot detection to catch automated scraping.
Tracking Protection Events
Every time a protection triggers, we log it. View these in:
- Analytics - See total blocks over time
- Threat Intelligence - See which pages are targeted most
Troubleshooting
"Protection isn't working"
- Clear your browser cache
- Wait 2-3 minutes for changes to propagate
- Test in an incognito window
- Check that the app embed is enabled in your theme
"Customers are complaining"
Consider disabling text selection protection, as it can be frustrating. Right-click and image protection rarely cause issues for legitimate customers.
"I see protection events but didn't trigger them"
Those are real visitors (or bots) trying to copy your content. That's Store Shield working!
FAQ
Q: Will this hurt my SEO? A: No. Search engines can still read and index your content. Protection only affects interactive browsing.
Q: Can customers still share my products? A: Yes. Share buttons, social links, and your product URLs all work normally.
Q: Does this work on mobile? A: Yes. Long-press image saving and text selection are blocked on mobile too.
