Spy Detection
Spy detection identifies browser extensions and tools that competitors use to analyze your Shopify store.
Why Spy Detection?
Competitor spy tools can reveal:
- Your best-selling products
- Your traffic and sales estimates
- Your apps and themes
- Your supplier information
- Your pricing strategy
- Your ad campaigns
This gives competitors an unfair advantage.

How Detection Works
We look for telltale signs of spy tools:
Extension Markers
Spy tools inject code that leaves traces:
- Global JavaScript variables
- DOM elements with specific IDs
- Modified page behavior
Resource Loading
Extensions load resources we can detect:
- Extension icons and images
- Background scripts
- Content scripts
Behavioral Patterns
Spy tools often:
- Make unusual API calls
- Access specific page elements
- Run analysis scripts
What You See
When we detect a spy tool:

Responding to Spy Activity
Understanding the Data
High spy tool usage might indicate:
- Competitors actively monitoring you
- Your store is successful (they want to copy you!)
- You're in a competitive niche
Actions You Can Take
- Monitor - Track which pages are being analyzed
- Strengthen content protection - Enable all protections
- Block IPs - Block frequent spy tool users
- Obscure data - Some merchants change product names or use variants creatively
When to Worry
- Consistent daily spy activity from same IPs
- Followed by competitor copying your products
- Patterns matching your product launches
When NOT to Worry
- Occasional spy tool detections (normal in ecommerce)
- Random one-time visits
- Your own team testing tools
Limitations
Spy detection can identify when tools are used but can't:
- Block the tools completely (they run in the user's browser)
- Prevent all data collection
- Stop screenshots or manual copying
Think of it as an early warning system rather than a shield.
Best Practices
Combine with Other Protections
Spy detection works best with:
- Content protection - Make copying harder
- Bot detection - Catch automated analysis
- IP blocking - Block persistent offenders
Track Patterns
- Note if spy activity precedes competitor actions
- Identify which products are most analyzed
- Use insights to stay ahead
Don't Overreact
- Some competitive analysis is normal
- Focus on being better, not just blocking
- Use the data to understand your market
FAQ
Q: Can I block spy tools completely? A: No, because they run in the visitor's browser. But detection lets you know when they're used and who's using them.
Q: Will spy tools show false positives? A: Rarely. We specifically look for known tool signatures. Normal browser extensions don't trigger detection.
Q: Do the spy tool users know they're detected? A: No. Detection is silent. You're alerted, but they aren't.
Q: What if my team uses these tools? A: You can whitelist your team's IP addresses to ignore those detections.
Q: How often are new tools added? A: We continuously update our detection as new spy tools emerge. Updates happen automatically.
